Cheaper Is Not Always Better When It Comes to Auto Insurance!

April 22, 2008

You may have already learned this uncomfortable life lesson, or perhaps you are still waiting to experience it. It is a sad truth, but one we all must face – you cannot trust everyone, and that goes for auto insurance companies, too. Even though most of the companies that are in business are reputable, it is the ones who are not that will take your money and sell you an automobile insurance policy that may not be as complete as you think it is.

Granted, there are some insurance companies out there that are cheaper than others are. We see the television commercials with the gecko or the caveman in them all the time, with these characters extolling the virtues of one such company. However, what about the really cheap places, the kind who have their office in what used to be a barber shop or are on the Internet with a hastily built web site? Can they be trusted?

Probably not, but like everything else in this world, there are exceptions. The only way you can find out for sure is to do some checking. See how long they have been in business. Find out if the company is financially secure. A couple of phone calls or a web search should take care of these two. You can also do a web search to see if any irate customers of the insurance agency in question have posted any irate missives. Call the Better Business Bureau and see if any complaints have been filed against the company.

If an insurance company checks out okay, then you can obtain a quote from them either by telephone or on their web site. This is preferable to doing it in person, as you don’t have to worry about the agent trying to sell you on a type of coverage you don’t feel is right for you. Before getting a quote, it’s a good idea to find out what your state guidelines are for auto insurance so that you can be sure you are complying with the law.

You will need to have some personal information ready in order to receive a quote. If you are going to add anyone else to your policy, you will need their information as well. Usually, this information consists of your vehicle’s VIN number, and your driver’s license and social security numbers. Don’t settle on a quote from just one company. You are trying to get the best rates, so shop around a little. Once you have received several quotes, you can compare them and decide which insurance company is right for you.

As long as you have checked the company out in advance and made sure that they are reputable, you can buy auto insurance with peace of mind.
