Basic Home Insurance

May 3, 2008

Some people are not interested in trying to save money on their home insurance or add extra coverage to their policy in order to protect the investment they have in their house even more. They don’t want to get involved in the time it takes to get a lower priced policy or any type of augmentation. They just want a good, average home insurance policy with no frills – just the basics.

So what do you get with a basic home insurance policy? It will cover the whole structure of your house. It protects the house from fire, hail, wind, lightning, ice and other things such as tornados and hurricanes. The dollar amount of your policy for basic insurance would need to be the amount that it would cost to rebuild your home if for example a tornado demolished it. This can help keep the cost of your premiums low.

Many people think their home should be insured for how much the house is worth. This can be a costly mistake, as normally it does not take as much money to rebuild a house as it did to build it from the ground up.

You also get insurance that will cover any sort of accident or injury someone outside of your immediate family has inside or outside your home or anywhere on your property. It also protects you and the members of your family coverage for any type of damage that you might do to another person’s property.

Basic home insurance also provides the policyholder with a sum of money to allow them to find other temporary shelter if their own house is damaged in some way, and to pay some of their expenses.

One sure way to drive up the price of your home insurance is to over insure items in your home that a basic policy will only cover up to a certain amount.

Things such as jewelry, a coin or stamp collection, a gun collection, or anything that has a high dollar value would need additional insurance added to the basic policy, which can turn out to be expensive. Many people store their valuables in someplace away from their home such as a safe deposit box. Then, they have no worries about losing their valuables to a thief or a fire.

If you stick with these basic forms of coverage and do not over insure your valuables, then your home insurance will protect you well at a price you can afford.
