Student Auto Insurance

May 13, 2008

College students already have enough expenses trying to further their education, yet most people know that young people pay more for automobile insurance than anyone else. Students can expect this to continue for quite some time, too. Policies can vary from a few thousand dollars a year all the way up to as much as ten or eleven thousand dollars, all depending on what kind of car, the driving record of the student, how old the vehicle is, and the city and state where the vehicle will be used.

If you happen to be a student with a snazzy sports car, you can expect to pay even more! In addition, if you are a male, student or not, who is less than 25 years of age and drives a sports car, you will pay the most of all. You may be wondering why, and it is because insurance statistics show that young male drivers use their cars more often and have more accidents as well. They also have more incidents of risky driving behavior.

This is really not fair to the young people, be they male or female, who are good drivers. They must pay as much for their insurance as the driver who takes risks behind the wheel.

How do the insurance companies figure these rates when there are so many different types of cars and so many young people driving them? Most of the companies have a special way to calculate the age, the make, and the model of the car in order to come up with the premium amount.

Most students wonder how they can pay less for their insurance. The first thing they should do is to check with all of the insurance companies and compare rates. It’s an easy matter to get a quote from each one you are interested in. These figures can be eye openers, indeed! Insurance rates can differ from company to company by up to 300%, according to industry watchdogs.

There is one discount that is available just for students. Any students who attend school full time(in the state of Georgia), and those who have graduated from college up to the age of 25 can get what is known as a Good Student Discount if their grade point average is a B or above.

Price is not everything, though. You want an insurance company that will be there for you when you have questions – and you probably will! You want an agent who will take the time to explain your policy to you, and tries to get you the best deal possible. Make sure you read over your policy careful before committing yourself to it. Choosing the wrong policy can turn out to be very expensive!
