Home Insurance for Renters and Homeowners

If you do not have home insurance for your own home or the house or apartment that you rent, you are missing out on the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you are protected from loss of your dwelling or possessions due to theft, fire, smoke, water, or damage from inclement weather such as high winds or hail.

When you have a home insurance policy, you also have the assurance that you are protected against financial loss in case you are taken to court because of an accident that happened on your property (such as your neighbor stumbling over the garden hose on your front lawn and breaking his ankle).

Home Insurance

Your home is a huge financial investment, and it makes sense to want to protect yourself financially in the event of a catastrophe. A home insurance policy will cover

  • The physical structure of your house such as the roof.
  • Any sort of permanent outbuildings or structure on your property such as a storage building or barn.
  • Your personal property, which can include your furniture, jewelry, electronic equipment, and other valuable items you may own.

You are covered for –

  • Damage to your home from most causes unless the cause is purposely left out of the policy.
  • Someone stealing or vandalizing any of your personal property, as long as the theft or vandilization is specified in the policy as a ‘named peril’
  • Any additional money you might have to pay out as a result of any damage or loss that is covered on your policy.
  • Home insurance policies are customizable to the extent that you can specify that you want additional coverage for some of your more expensive personal items. There are a variety of different types of additional coverage offered, and these are known as endorsements.

Renter’s Insurance

Renter’s insurance covers your personal items that you have inside the apartment or home you are renting. It does not cover the dwelling itself; that is the responsibility of the owner. You get more or less the same coverage as the home owner does as far as protection against fire, smoke, water damage, theft, or damage from inclement weather. Your policy also will cover liability protection where you are covered against financial loss, including court costs if someone has an accident in your house or apartment. Renter’s insurance can also cover the medical expenses of someone who is injured on your property.

When you think about how much your home or your personal property is worth, it’s easy to see that the cost of home or renter’s insurance is quite cheap in comparison.
